Creating a car sketch: "the basics"

  • Before starting...

    Tools used :

    » 1 pencil,
    » 1 eraser,
    » 1 sheet of layout.

Let's go ! Click the right arrow to start.

  • Step 1

» First, trace the horizon and a vertical line.

» These two lines set the direction of the vehicle(here : 3/4 rear, low angle shot).

  • Step 2

» Set the vanishing points (here, there are two points outside of the sheet),

» Place two vanishing lines that will define the height of the beltline.

  • Step 3

» Choose the position of the wheel middles with vertical lines.

» Then trace the axis of axles and a line through the middle of both wheels that will be visible.

  • Step 4

» Now, the design of the wheels...

» The 5 next slides show you how to draw the rear wheel step by step. You will have to use the same technics to draw the front wheel.

  • Step 5

» Define the overall volume of the wheel by drawing a parallelepiped based on the lines defined in step 3.

  • Step 6

» Draw a new vertical line to set the center of the rim.

  • Step 7

» Trace the outlines of the tyre and the hub of the rim, using all the marks previously defined.

  • Step 8

» Here is the last slide before proceeding to the design of the complete wheel. I suggest you draw a middle line for each stick of your rim (5 here).

  • Step 9

» You have all landmarks to sketch the entire wheel. Now, use your imagination !

NB : On this drawing, the sketch of the rim is not very detailed becaused I wished it looked like a rotating wheel.

  • Step 10

» After repeating steps 4 to 9 for the front wheel, start designing the body again : trace the wheel arches and the roof.

    » Define also the windows.

  • Step 11

» Now design the identity of your car : define the car lights, the bumpers, air inlets...

  • Step 12

» The last details to complete your sketch : the doors, the trunk, the exhaust and the mirrors.

  • Finished !!!!

    » It's over ! Next chapter : the colors !.

» To see the different stages of colouring, go to page "Colors".
